A “meaningless speculation”-this was how Kalin Mitrev described the information that he received from an Azerbaijani company at least EUR 425,000 for consulting services to rehabilitate the image of Azerbaijan. Kalin Mitrev told Nova TV that the scandal related to the investigation of the so-called Azerbaijani Laundromat was an attack against him and his wife-UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova. Bulgaria’s Finance minister Vladislav Goranov has acquainted the Bulgarian cabinet during today’s sitting with Mitrev’s explanations. Kalin Mitrev said that he worked as an independent consultant under different contracts in Bulgaria, Switzerland, Cyprus, England, Azerbaijan and other countries between 2010 and 2014 and that he terminated those activities when he was appointed a representative of Bulgaria at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Bulgaria’s Chief Prosecutor has considered the issue on his own initiative under publications in the media. In his view, data point to two possible crimes-tax offence and money laundering.
