Heavy traffic at start of Bulgaria's long weekend despite restrictions

Photo: BTA

At the start of the 3-day long weekend in Bulgaria from May 1 to May 3, strong traffic of cars through the checkpoints at the entrances and exits of Sofia and other regional cities is being monitored

The restrictions on intercity travel due to the coronavirus crisis are still in effect as traffic police require declarations from each driver as to the reasons for travelling.
The police expect stronger traffic throughout the day on May 1 as people leave Sofia, with queues of cars at least 2-3 kilometres long.

40 thousand cars have left Sofia in the past 24 hours as nearly 7,000 drivers have been refused to pass because of false data in their declarations.

A peak in the intercity traffic is expected again on May 6 evening and May 7 morning as May 6 is also an official non-working day in Bulgaria.
