EU urges Bulgaria to adopt programme for management of nuclear waste

Photo: Rumiana Georgieva

Bulgaria is among the six EU countries without a national programme for management of radioactive waste. In this regard, the European Commission gave this country 3 months to develop such programme. The Commission also sent a letter of formal notice to Bulgaria requesting the complete transposition of the revised Basic Safety Standards Directive into its national legislation. Otherwise, the matter may be referred to the EU Court of Justice. The Directive, which modernises and consolidates EU radiation protection legislation, lays down basic safety standards to protect members of the public, workers and patients against the dangers arising from exposure to ionising radiation. This country was required to transpose the directive two years ago, but it has failed to do so in a complete manner. Bulgaria’s government has three months to make the necessary changes before Brussels continues the infringement procedure.
