Leading contemporary author Alek Popov has died

Writer Alek Popov has passed away at the age of 58, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has announced. The author of Mission London, The Black Box, Mythology of Transition, Palaveev Sisters, Mission Turan died on 22 March.

The books by Alek Popov enjoyed unflagging interest among readers, many have undergone numerous editions, some have been adapted for the screen or for the stage.  

Alek Popov was born in Sofia in 1966, and graduated from the National School for Ancient Languages and Cultures, and from the St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia.

His novel Mission London has been translated into 16 languages, and The Black Box – into 10. His short stories and essays have been published in most European languages and have been included in numerous international collections, including Best European Fiction 2011. Alek Popov is holder of a multitude of awards, and a corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
