Bulgaria wants to invite mayors from Taraclia to gain insight into how the European Union functions

Bulgaria supports the start of EU accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, said Bulgaria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev during the EU Foreign Affairs Council held in Luxembourg. European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos stated that this could happen by November.

Asked how Sofia will work with the Bulgarian community in Taraclia — which is known for its strong pro-Russian sentiment, as reflected in Moldova’s parliamentary elections — Minister Georgiev responded:

"The activity of an EU member state like Bulgaria in these regions is the key to countering Russian propaganda, disinformation and hybrid actions. You know that I visited Moldova in May. At that time, we opened the first branch of a Bulgarian university abroad. Promoting our language, culture and science is the tool we use to combat hybrid threats. I believe this is one of our priorities, shared by the Moldovan government as well", said Minister Georgiev.

He added that discussions had been held with Chișinău for mayors from the Taraclia region to visit Bulgaria in order to see how Bulgarian municipalities operate, what the benefits of EU funds are, and to gain a real understanding of what the EU is, reported BGNES.
