Fatal accident with illegal immigrant in Bulgaria sends distress signals

On Thursday evening, in a moment when the European Council was discussing the problem with the migratory pressure towards the European Union, a fatal gunshot fired by a Bulgarian member of the Border Police took the life of an illegal immigrant from Afghanistan who entered the Bulgarian territory. The immigrant was part of a large group consisting of 54 immigrants who refused to follow the instructions of the Border Police. According to Bulgaria’s Ministry of Interior, the policeman was not shooting directly at the immigrant, but the bullet unfortunately hit the migrant after a ricochet. However, some people doubted that version and insisted that that case had nothing to do with a border accident, because the action took place far from the Bulgarian-Turkish border. A spokesperson of the United Nations said he was shocked by the fact that a migrant who sought asylum in Bulgaria found his death in that country and reminded that that was the first case when a migrant was shot dead in an EU member state. Apparently, that accident was of very big significance, since Bulgaria’s Premier Borissov left the debates in Brussels and returned to Bulgaria. The President of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker and the President of the European Council Donald Tusk also responded to that accident. Some officials, however, criticized the actions of the Bulgarian Border Police and the use of weapons against immigrants who cross the country’s borders illegally. However, nobody asked the question what else a border patrol of three officers could have done against 53 illegal strangers who refused to obey the instructions of the Border Police? However, that case is not an isolated one. Several hours before the fatal accident in Sredets the Bulgarian Police and the National Gendarmerie detained 15 illegal Afghani nationals after a car chase in Burgas. Why those people were trying to escape from the authorities, if they had to receive a legal status in a given moment anyway? Why some immigrants refuse to respect the rules of the country which is supposed to provide them asylum and which is also supposed to protect its own population, too. Some of the Bulgarian people already answered this question and initiated a petition in support of the police officer who fired the fatal gunshot. However, neither the policeman, nor the state, which sent him to protect its population are to blame for that case. The accident comes after four years of intensive flow of illegal immigrants to Bulgaria and Europe. Moreover, thousands of migrants lost their lives on their way to Europe, before even reaching Bulgarian territory in other circumstances. Currently we are all witnessing an unprecedented process of migration with many complicated situations, which require responsible and adequate behavior from all participants.
