Standoff in Sofia continues, assailant opens fire at police

The man who barricaded himself in his home in Strelbishte residential area in Sofia has taken shots at the police who have been attempting to negotiate with him, said Interior Ministry Secretary General Georgi Kostov.

The standoff started more than 15 hours ago when a retired police officer shot at his daughter and then barricaded himself in his home together with his bed-ridden wife. The daughter escaped unscathed and contacted the police. The location has been cordoned off by the police. Interior Ministry officials say there is no direct threat to the man’s neighbours who have not been evacuated.
