In a historical context, not even a single project of nationalists or populists has contributed to human progress in the long term, Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev contends in an interview for 24 Hours Daily. On the UK referendum the president points out there have been many lies, demagogy and playing on the fears of people. He urges the British citizens to decide as soon as possible what their first steps will be, because any delay in solving the problem will make it worse. Rosen Plevneliev points out that he has strong confidence in referendums and is proud of being the first Bulgarian President to have initiated a national one. He however specifies that referendums should not include anti-constitutional questions like the ones present in the plebiscite prepared by the team of TV host Slavi Trifonov. The president argues that the presence of such questions and possible suspension of decisions by the Constitutional Court would lead to decline of trust in institutions.
