EU enlargement into Balkans to slow down: analysis

Photo: picture library

Talking to the Bulgarian National Radio, journalists Ivaylo Vasilev and Plamen Yotinski agreed that the European enlargement into the Balkans would slow down. Brexit is one reason for the slowdown, but more importantly Serbia and Macedonia have disputes to settle with their “good” neighbors, Plamen Yotinski argued. Regarding Macedonia, Brexit is no problem. The problem is the attitude of Greece that prominently stays in the way of Macedonia’s EU accession.Regarding Serbia’s accession talks, Ivaylo Vasilev urged the Bulgarian authorities to follow the example of Croatia. It tabled quite specific demands to Serbia and has in this way pushed talks into a standstill. The region has huge internal problems and Brexit or other things external are of little harm. Brexit will no doubt add to the delay in accession talks, but there are a few conflicts in the Balkans that have stayed unresolved for years, Ivaylo Vasilev concluded.
