A specialized police force operation on the Bulgaria-Turkey border begins today aimed to curb migration and human trafficking. It has been prompted by the double increase in migration pressure since the beginning of this month, said in Burgas the Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Georgi Kostov. He specified that for the past 24 hours alone, eleven groups with the total of 220 migrants had been returned to Turkish territory after they had crossed into Bulgaria illegally near Malko Tarnovo and Rezovo. Since the beginning of August the average of 200 migrants a day try to cross the border, which is double the numbers reported in July. So far in August there have been 1858 attempts at crossing the Bulgaria-Turkey border and since the beginning of the year attempts have been close to 30,000. 1350 illegal migrants have been accommodated in migration centers over the past two weeks. The Burgas region has now become a critical zone where migration pressure is concerned. New border check-points in its territory will open in a bid to curb migration, the Director of the National Police General Directorate Hristo Terziiski explained. Starting today more than 150 staff from the Gendarmerie Directorate will be sent to assist the work of border police. FRONTEX is expected to send 200 officers to Bulgaria, Border Police Director Antonio Angelov said. Since the beginning of this month border services on the Turkish side have become more active too and cooperate with their Bulgarian colleagues, Georgi Kostov said.
