Announcements in some Bulgarian media that Russia has agreed to support another Bulgarian nominee for UN General Secretary instead of the officially nominated UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova do not correspond with reality, the spokesperson of Russian President Vladimir Putin Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday, quoted by TASS agency. Peskov denied speculations that President Putin and German Chancellor Merkel agreed on such a step during the latest G20 summit in China. Earlier on Sunday the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova pointed out that attempts to exert influence on other countries’ decisions to nominate one or another candidate are unacceptable and that each country makes the sovereign decision to nominate people for the highest position in the UN.
