Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has promised Bulgaria’s support for the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) on condition that Canadian visas for Bulgarian nationals are abolished.
The Bulgarian prime minister made his comments in Maastricht, Holland where he arrived to take part in the meeting of European People’s Party heads of state and government. The forum precedes the European Council meeting, which opens in Brussels later in the day.
“Our position on CETA is very clear – Bulgaria and Romania have not been given their due, unfairly, several times – as was the case with Schengen. Everyone – the European Commission, the European Parliament say that Bulgaria and Romania are ready for Schengen, yet we are not being admitted. In this case, this problem is being transferred onto the visa-free travel of Bulgarian and Romanian citizens to Canada,” PM Borissov stated.
