At the end of their term of office President Rosen Plevneliev and Vice President Margarita Popova presented a summary of their work over the past five years. The president said that a very challenging but to his mind, a successful presidential term was about the close. In the course of only two years, five governments and three parliaments changed, however along the way the presidential institution remained a center of stability and continuity, he pointed out. As to international affairs, the head of state said he had conducted a consistent and explicit policy for Bulgaria’s active and worthy membership of the European Union and NATO. In turn, Vice President Margarita Popova admitted that Bulgaria had problems with the stability of the political system and was bound to overcome hate speech and division which had been troubling the nation for years. Structural reforms cannot solve the problems disuniting Bulgarian society. Bulgaria needs unity and consensus to be able to achieve better education, healthcare and calm, Popova pointed out.
