Bulgaria’s printed media accentuate on Monday on a TV interview with the Ambassador of Russia to Sofia Anatoly Makarov. Mr Makarov said on Sunday (March 5) that Russia was still interested in the construction of the suspended Belene nuclear power plant.  Ambassador Makarov points out that the energy project was suspended due to the lack of strong political will, rather than to financial or economic reasons, Dnevnik daily informs. In Anatoly Makarov’s words, Moscow was also interested in the construction of the Balkan gas hub project, if the financial and economic justification favors its construction and if the EU provides the necessary guarantees. Standart daily accentuates that in his interview Ambassador Makarov stressed again on the possibility of a new visit of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to Sofia. Anatoly Makarov told BTV station that such visit should be very well-prepared. Trud daily comments on Monday that in the past 4 days the Ambassadors of the USA and Russia to Bulgaria spoke in various interviews for Bulgaria’s media about possible visits of Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to Sofia. The newspaper reminds that last week the US Ambassador to Bulgaria Eric Rubin said that he would continue working actively for a possible visit of US President Trump to Sofia. On Sunday Russia’s Ambassador to Sofia Makarov pointed out that Vladimir Putin may pay official visit to Sofia next year on occasion of the 140th anniversary of Bulgaria’s liberation from the Ottoman Rule and discuss with Bulgaria’s officials concrete bilateral projects, Trud writes on Monday. The newspaper contends that the latest statements of the Ambassadors of the USA and Russia to Bulgaria prove that Sofia was within the sight of Washington and Moscow and asks the question who would come to Bulgaria first- Trump or Putin? 24 Chassa daily makes a more moderate comment and notes that it became clear from Anatoly Makarov’s words that he was not instructed to propose possible visit of President Putin to Sofia and that Bulgaria’s President Radev did not sent an official invitation to Putin.
