St. Elijah’s day marked today

Photo: library

Today the Bulgarian Orthodox church honours the memory of the prophet Elijah (Ilyia) – a herald of the true faith in the one true God, a feast day Bulgarians hold in the highest esteem.

The day of St. Elijah, 20 July, coincides with the anniversary of the Ilinden-Preobrazhenia uprising, the highest point in the national liberation struggles of Macedonian and Thracian Bulgarians. After it was crushed in 1903, 30,000 people from the regions of the Ottoman Empire affected fled to Bulgaria.
