Events on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the liberation of the Bulgarian city of Lovech from Ottoman rule took place on Sunday and citizens and guests saw a historic reenactment of the battles of the summer of 1877.

"The battle for the city is reenacted in five episodes and we are to pay tribute to the heroes who fell in the fight for freedom," mayor of the city Kornelia Marinova told the Bulgarian National Radio.

More than 100 volunteers have taken part in the reenactment, it was reported. Citizens have also laid flowers and wreaths to the monument of the fallen for liberation.
