We have sent a joint letter with the Foreign Ministers of Romania, Greece and Hungary to our Ukrainian counterpart on occasion of legislative amendments in that country that limit language teaching in mother tongue after the 5th grade, Bulgaria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva said on Thursday. The Foreign Ministers of Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and Hungary voiced concerns that the education law in Ukraine may affect the rights of minorities and their education in mother tongue. Ukraine already has assured Bulgaria through official contacts that the abovementioned amendments aim at strengthening the Ukrainian language and would in no way affect the study of Bulgarian language in schools. The Bulgarian diaspora in Ukraine has unique network of over 50 Sunday schools and Bulgarian language is taught even in Ukrainian schools, Minister Zaharieva reminded.
