State of emergency declared in Smolyan and Chepelare because of heavy rainfall

Because of the heavy rainfall in the Rhodope Mountain town of Smolyan, a state of emergency has been declared. The Cherna River crossing the town has overflowed in several places. The warning for dangerous weather in the region of Smolyan has been raised to code red.

According to data from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology rainfall has reached 100 liters per square meter during the past 12 hours. Today a huge landslide closed the main road linking Smolyan and the city of Plovdiv.

In the town of Chepelare, Smolyan municipality, a state of emergency has also been declared. The situation in the city is extremely complicated. The level of the Chaya River there has significantly increased, it was reported.
