European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Vytenis Andriukaitis will give a briefing today to Bulgarian journalists over the ovine rinderpest (sheep and goat plague) outbreak in Bulgaria.

Commissioner Andriukaitis recently stated that killing the infected animals was the only way to cope with the problem. Because of the likelihood that the virus entered Bulgaria from Turkey, Brussels has proposed coordination of further action for resolving the problem to the Turkish authorities, in written form.

Experts from the European Commission’s Health and Consumer Protection Directorate-General are currently in Bulgaria to check how the authorities are tackling the crisis.
