A little over 5,000 illegal migrants have been captured by the Turkish border authorities since the beginning of the year near Edirne in an attempt to enter Bulgaria, the Bulgarian News Agency BTA reports.

A total of 13,900 migrants have been detained during the first 8 months of the year, as they were trying to cross Turkey's borders with Bulgaria and Greece.

The barbed wire fence that Bulgaria built along its border with Turkey is viewed by the refugees as a more difficult barrier to cross and they are now heading more towards the border with Greece, observers report. The main flow of migrants comes from Syria and Iraq, followed by refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Iran and the African countries.

In the meantime in the early afternoon in Tsarevo, the Bulgarian border police detained 15 migrants. They are without ID papers and have not pointed to their country of origin.
