During his visit to Britain, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev held a lecture at Oxford Union, Oxford University's largest debating community, set up in 1823.

The president pointed out the importance of security today because if there were no security there would be no economy, business, politics. Europe needs to be strong and play a decisive role on the global stage, but so far has shown modest ambitions in development and ensuring its own security in perspective, Rumen Radev said. As internal security challenges in Europe, he identified economic and social disparities, rising inequalities, and high-level corruption undermining the rule of law.

The head of state has also talked about the fake news he described as the strongest weapon of hybrid war. Speaking about the immigration crisis, he pointed out that he supported strengthening of borders, but not the transformation of Europe into a fortress.

On a question how Bulgaria balanced between EU, US and Russian interests, the president explained that Bulgaria is a member of the EU and NATO, but it must also defend its national interests. President Radev added that this country had not only interests in the sphere of security and the economy but also energy interests.
