On Sunday, October 21, the opening of the third edition of the Brazilian Film and Culture Week, under the motto "Traces of Afro-Brazilian Culture," took place in Sofia. Organizers are the Brazilian Embassy in Bulgaria and Brazilian Cultural Center "Zenon." The idea is to focus on the contribution of Afro-Brazilians to Brazilian culture through film, music, literature, dance, fine arts, photography, and even culinary art. It is well known that the population of Brazil has indigenous, Portuguese and Afro-Brazilian roots. When talking about the contribution of Afro-Brazilians, we usually think of their music, the samba, but they also have merit in all areas of life, particularly in the culture of this country, Rumen Stoyanov, coordinator and leader of literary meetings, says. The forum includes screenings of feature films and short films in the "G8 Cultural Center" and "Eurocinema". Exhibition space for paintings and photographs has been provided by well-known galleries in the Bulgarian capital city, such as "Nuance," "Pentimento," "Photosynthesis".
On Friday, October 26, interesting events are scheduled to take place at the "Pancho Vladigerov" National Academy of Music. At 2pm the Brazilian Music Archive will be presented. This is the start of an archival collection, which is set by a donation by composer Marco Padilha, who provided scores and recordings of his works. A lecture and concert of jazz pianist Diogo Monzo is scheduled next.
We learned more from Preslav Stoyanov - a guitarist who studied in Brazil and coordinator of the events in the National Academy of Music:
Diogo will be speaking about Brazilian music and its variety, as wells as its application in jazz. Indeed, improvisation in Brazilian music cannot be fully linked to jazz as it is has its own characteristics. However, people often link this music to jazz, calling it "Brazilian jazz". In general, this is the topic of the lecture titled "Variety in Brazilian music: peculiarities and influences seen from theory and practice". The concert is at 7pm when Diogo will perform the works from his last album, which will show everything said in the lecture in practice.
Entrance for all events is free of charge.
