The Institute for Population and Human Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences came up with three demographic scenarios for 2040 under a project aimed at overcoming the demographic crisis in this country initiated by the Bulgarian government. According to the worst case scenario, Bulgaria’s population in 2040 will amount to 5.860.000 people. According to the second scenario, 6.520.000 people will live in this country in 2040 and according to the best-case scenario, Bulgaria’s population will amount to 6.750.000 in 2040. The scientists believe that the third scenario is unrealistic. The institute came to the conclusion that despite the demographic policies used in Bulgaria in the coming years the population of this country will continue to drop. Birthrate can rise if some of the Bulgarians who left this country after 1989 return to their home country. According to the forecasts, the Bulgarian population will continue to age and the authorities have to to adopt special policies to keep the people on the labor market longer. The research also shows that nearly one-third of the Bulgarian population in active age is unemployed and 80% of the people are unwilling to work due to the low wages.
