The celebrations of the 130th anniversary of Bulgaria’s oldest higher institute of learning – the St. Kliment Ohridski University in Sofia - will culminate on 8 December.
St. Kliment Ohridski is the first Bulgarian higher institute of learning. In 1887, Education Minister Todor Ivanchev issued a decree for the establishment of a pedagogy class at First Men’s Secondary School in Sofia, where lectures started on 1 October, 1888. On 8 December, 1888, the National Assembly voted to transform it into a higher education establishment, and the decision came into effect on 1 January, 1889.
Today Sofia University has 16 faculties with 117 fields of study. The most prestigious Bulgarian university maintains active contacts with over 500 universities around the world.
The anniversary celebrations will be attended by President Rumen Radev.
