The Council of Ministers will propose to parliament that it commissions it to launch negotiations with USA on the acquisition of F-16 fighter jets for the needs of Bulgarian aviation.
The news was announced by Defence Minister Krasimir Karakachanov after the cabinet sitting which examined the report of the Defence Ministry on the purchase of a new fighter aircraft. It is proposed that the negotiating team include the ministers of economy, defence, foreign affairs and finance.
The plans are to purchase 8 aircraft for the sum of up to 920 million euro /1.8 billion Leva/. The requirements are for the first two jets to be delivered within the space of two years.
“The new fighter jet is indispensable for the Bulgarian air force,” said Chief of Defence General Andrey Botsev and expressed the hope that the contract would be concluded soon.
