The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) warns that all Bulgarian rivers and their feeders have been affected by pollution, drought, wastewater and extraction of inert materials. Thus, the migration of animal species was impeded. A total of 270 hydropower plants were built on 325 rivers in this country and another 200 projects for construction of water power plants have been approved. As a result, Danube River and its feeders lost 60% of the fish populations in the past 20 years. 50 fish species of which 4 extinct and 46 endangered of extinction were included in Bulgaria’s Red Book.
