US State Department critical of judicial system in Bulgaria

In its annual report, the US State Department once again levels criticism at the judicial system in Bulgaria.

Corruption, inefficiency of the system and a lack of accountability are cited as persisting core problems, trust in the legal system continues low, and the opinion is widespread that magistrates are susceptible to political pressure. The report adds that the media are also the target of political and economic pressure, even though, with regard to the freedom of expression in the country, there are no legal impediments.
