On Thursday (April 11) thousands of citizens protested downtown Gabrovo for the second consecutive day amid tensions that arose from an incident in which three men of Roma origin were recorded on a video assaulting a shop assistant. As a result, there were clashes between the citizens and the gendarmerie. Three people, including one Police officer, were slightly injured in the clashes. Nine people were detained. Bulgaria’s Deputy Premier Tomislav Donchev and Gabrovo Mayor Tanya Hristova tried to talk with the protesters, but were welcomed with demands for resignation instead. At a briefing held on Friday morning Deputy Premier Donchev commented that the peoples’ anger is fair, but called on everyone to protest peacefully. The Mayor of Gabrovo Tanya Hristova called on the political parties to avoid using the topic related to ethnic peace for political purposes and asked the citizens to refrain from violence, because in her words nothing can be achieved through violence.
