Bulgarian farmers complain of dumping of Macedonian lamb

Photo: library

Eighty tons of North Macedonian lamb with unclear origin stamps is flooding the Bulgarian market, the National Association of Sheep Breeders and Goat Breeders in Bulgaria warned. The meat is 20% cheaper as compared to the Bulgarian meat, but can be dangerous, the association contends. The meat comes from a slaughterhouse in Kavadarci, but is imported in Bulgaria from Greece. The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency has not yet checked the central storehouses in Sofia, Plovdiv and Dobrich, where the lamb meat was delivered. The Bulgarian lamb breeders called on the Minister of Agriculture and Food to launch an inspection. Nearly 200 tons of Bulgarian lamb are expected to be sold during the Easter holidays, which is one-third less than in previous years.
