The Bulgarian government is allocating 379 million euro from the national budget for the construction of the section of Struma motorway across Kresna Gorge.

This sum will be added to the European funding already approved. Construction will ensure a significant improvement of the road network in Southeastern Europe and will help intensify cooperation among the countries in the southern portion of the Balkans. The new roadway will make traffic safer and reduce travelling time in a North-South direction across Bulgarian territory, the motives for the decision read.

Struma motorway is part of the Eastern Mediterranean corridor of the main Trans-European transport network and provides a direct route via Bulgaria to the Aegean Sea.
