Bulgaria to be audited by EC over African swine fever

Photo: BGNES

At the end of September Bulgaria is to undergo a European Commission audit of the measures the country is applying to tackle the swine fever epidemic, on which the financial support for the measures taken depends, said Minister of Agriculture Desislava Taneva in an interview for the Bulgarian National Radio.

Bulgaria will insist on changes that will allow small farmers to receive compensation even though their pigs have not been registered. Bulgaria expects the EU to grant the country 11 million euro in compensation for the pigs put down in industrial pig farms, and 2.9 million euro to combat the virus. At this time mandatory measures for the preventive culling of domestic pigs are in place in 23 out of all 28 districts in the country.
