Gaps in implementation of NATURA 2000 have been identified

Photo: library

The Bulgarian National Audit Office has identified deficiencies in the management of the Natura 2000 network. Bulgarian legislation has not been harmonized with Directives 92/43/EEC and 2009/147/EC on the conservation of natural habitats of wild fauna and flora.

Out of 341 protected areas, the Bulgarian Minister of Environment and Waters has not issued orders for 211 of them and no measures have been set for their preservation. That is why the European Commission has initiated penalty proceedings against Bulgaria. Failure to comply with EU environmental policy creates a risk of spending public money. Property owners in protected areas are also negatively affected. 9 recommendations have been given to the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture for the implementation of NATURA 2000.
