Protest against ratification of CETA held in front of Bulgaria’s National Assembly

Nearly 50 people protested on Tuesday in front of the Bulgarian National Assembly against the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the EU (CETA). The organizers (United Parents) show their discontent with the Child Strategy and the Social Services Act on a regular basis. They contend that ratification of CETA will lead to penetration of genetically-modified products on the Bulgarian market and are afraid that CETA will allow the extraction of shale gas on Bulgarian territory. Mihaela Bozhankova who is also taking part at today’s protests told the Bulgarian National Radio that CETA protects corporate foreign business, threatens the small business and places commercial interests above the national interests. The agreement removes 98% of the custom tariffs between the EU and Canada. In 2018 Canada was Bulgaria’s 40th largest trade partner.
