Half of the sand dunes on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast not included in cadastral maps

Photo: Archive

About half of the sand dunes on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast are not described in the specialized map in the cadastre and are not actually protected. A study by the Green Laws Association states that some of them are plowed and built up, while others are officially designated as pastures. Other unmapped sand formations have been found in private properties.

According to the country's constitution and laws, the dunes are exclusive state property and cannot be privatized or damaged in any way. However, some of them are becoming private land for unnecessary new hotels. Thus, habitats from the European Natura 2000 network in the dunes become covered in concrete and used as a source of construction material and parking lots.
