People in Bulgaria welcome sunrise on "July Morning"

Photo: BTA

For yet another year, early in the morning on July 1, young and old Bulgarians welcomed the sunrise near the sea and other water basins in the interior of the country.

"July Morning," named after a famous song by the Uriah Heep from 1971, is a hippie-style celebration in Bulgaria, which originated in the mid-80s of the past century during the times of the socialist regime. Although the tradition is associated with the hippie movement in America, it survives in Bulgaria to this very day as a symbol of freedom and desire for better future and dissatisfaction with stagnation.
