Bulgaria is working to implement Commission’s recommendations in environment field

Bulgaria is working to implement the recommendations of the European Commission related to the infringement procedures in the field of environment, this country’s Ministry of Environment and Water announced. In 2007, Sofia defined its protected areas, but final acts of declaration of protected areas have not been issued to 207 of them yet. No specific objectives and measures for the protection of habitats and species have been set. Moreover, Bulgaria is criticized for applying the Habitats Directive incorrectly. In order to overcome the weaknesses identified by the Commission, Bulgaria’s authorities have already submitted to the National Assembly a draft on amendments to the Biodiversity Act. The process of issuing orders for protected areas continues, the Ministry of Environment and Water further notes.
