Soskovcheto Nature Reserve – a piece of heaven in the heart of the Rhodopes

Photo: archive

The diversity of flora and fauna in Soskovcheto Nature Reserve, a haven in the summer heat located close to Smolyan in the Rhodopes, is truly amazing. But what tourists coming here are mostly after is the scenery and one of the most beautiful eco trails in Bulgaria which goes by the name of “Canyon of waterfalls”.

The trail cuts across a succession of water cascades, wooden bridges, steps and gazebos, hidden away in the shadows of the spruce trees. The eco trail traverses the entire reserve taking hikers to beautiful spots with breathtaking views, but the most spectacular landmarks here are the 46 waterfalls, the most striking among them being over 70 metres tall. It is called “Orpheus” because of the association of the water trickles down the rock face and the lyre strings of the legendary Orpheus.
