The European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking has announced the signing of a contract for an additional 11.5 million euro for Bulgaria’s new supercomputer. The new system will be capable of more than 4.4 petaflops, and will be hosted by Sofia Tech Park, the European Commission announced.

The supercomputer will be used for high-precision analysis of seismicity, weather forecasts, medical diagnostics and innovative treatment, the EC says.

“Investing in supercomputing infrastructure is crucial to improve the quality of life of EU citizens, boost competitiveness, and advance research and innovation,” said European Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager.
