The copayment by patients for healthcare in Bulgaria is three times higher than in the EU. This is shown by data from a draft National Health Strategy 2021-2030, published for public discussion, BNT reported.

According to the data in 2019, the out-of-pocket payments for healthcare in Bulgaria was 46%, compared to an average of 15% for the EU

Health expenditure per capita of EUR 1,311 is the fourth lowest in the EU. Total health expenditure represents 8.1% of GDP, which is below the EU average of 9.8%.

The new National Health Strategy envisages an increase in public spending in order to reduce patient co-payments, as well as increase costs for prevention of diseases.
