President Rumen Radev: Elections had to be held in September

The most appropriate time for holding the parliamentary elections was in September 2020, following the anti-government protests, Bulgaria's President Rumen Radev said before the ceremony for the official ordainment of Monsigneur Rumen Stanev in the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Sofia. In his words, the government is largely responsible for the high death toll from Covid-19 as they failed to prepare the country for the second wave of the pandemic.

"Billions were drained from the state budget during these months and we could prevent these losses if we had held the elections at the right time", the Bulgarian head of state further said.

He also commented on the refusal of the governing authorities to "undertake the due actions to restore the health of the electoral process", calling on all Bulgarian citizens to be watchful for the observance of the law.
