Bulgaria's Ombudsman: We need stricter punitive measures for domestic abusers

It is necessary to drop the requirement for systematic acts of violence in order to be able to punish the perpetrators. Currently, at least 3 offenses need to be perpetrated in order for an abuser to be punished. This was said by Bulgaria's Ombudsman Diana Kovacheva at a discussion organized by her, dedicated to the Bill on Protection from Domestic Violence

There are no official statistics on victims of domestic violence in Bulgaria, but according to NGOs, in 2020 there were 15 women killed by their partners, and at least five more such cases were reported in media publications.

The problem of domestic violence in Bulgaria has worsened, especially during the pandemic.

Kovacheva pointed out that victims of domestic violence should be provided not only with protection, but also with support for overcoming the negative consequences of the violence suffered.
