Photo register to keep signals of illegal logging

Photo: BGNES-archive / Photo: БГНЕС

A newly opened photo register allows citizens to help reduce tree poaching by uploading photos of illegal activities. According to Bulgaria’s Executive Forest Agency, in 2020 foresters issued nearly 10,000 notices for illegal logging.

Thanks to the implementation of the new register, the authorities will know which lorry transports legally cut wood and which one carries poached timber. The register will allow the competent authorities to compare photos and data about the logging trucks. It will start functioning within two weeks. In the beginning, the register will be used in Southwestern Bulgaria only.
