"Vaska Emanouilova" Gallery in Sofia takes us back to Paris from the 1930s, seen through the eyes of artists from the so-called Bulgarian colony. The exhibition "Meetings in Paris" presents a trip of a group of Bulgarian artists to the French capital, which for them was "the embodiment of the desired European modernity, seeking support from the heritage of antiquity, oscillating between avant-garde and traditionalism," curators say.
In the summer of 1939, Vaska Emanouilova was among the travelers and this was her first and last time to travel abroad. What she saw in Paris had a huge impact on her development as an artists, and she would later become the most famous and productive female sculptor in this country. In addition to works that have not been shown before, the exhibition includes 44 works related to the spirit of Paris by Nenko Balkanski, Iliya Beshkov, Georgi Popov (John), Donka Konstantinova. The opening of the exhibition is on February 9.
