Bulgarian beekeepers protested in front of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry downtown Sofia and threatened to set up a protest camp, if their demands are not met, reported BGNES.

Apiarists are protesting because of the high mortality in bee colonies caused by spraying with banned pesticides. Beekeepers demand a registry of beekeepers and a national beekeeping strategy.

They also demand financial compensations. In their words, winter mortality in bee colonies has reached 45%, as compared to 37% last year. According to statistics, there are more than 14,000 beekeepers in Bulgaria. However, only 4,000 of them are officially registered.
