The National Center of Polar Research and the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute unveiled a photo exhibition at the Central Lobby of the Sofia University. The exhibition is named “Bulgaria and Spain, Neighbors and Friends on Antarctica”. The exhibition includes emotional photos showing the friendship between Bulgarian and Spanish polar researchers who participated in Antarctic expeditions over the years. The exhibition takes place on occasion of the 110th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Bulgaria and the Kingdom of Spain and the 30th anniversary since the beginning of the joint polar research in Antarctica.
“Believe it or not – Spain is our neighbor… on Antarctica. Moreover, it is one of the best neighbors we could ever ask for”, said Bulgarian polar researchers during the unveiling of the photo exhibition. The Ambassador of Spain to Bulgaria H.E. Alejandro Polanco noted that last year, when a new island was discovered in Antarctica, Bulgarians came up with the idea to name it after Javier Cacho, a famous Spanish polar researcher and friend of the head of the Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition Professor Hristo Pimpirev.
The exhibition in Sofia will be open until March 18.
