Almost 70% of children under the age of three in Bulgaria are cared for by their parents at home, indicate Eurostat data for 2019. This is the highest percentage in Europe, the European average being 47%.
This can, to some extent be explained by the shortage of places in kindergartens in big cities, though on the other hand maternity leave in Bulgaria is the longest in the EU.
The highest share of children in childcare establishments is in Denmark – 66%. Eurostat data show that care for children under the age of three exclusively by their parents is, on the whole, more widespread in Eastern Europe.
Eurostat adds that due to the pandemic the data for 2020 are going to be very different.
