A Bulgarian female actor is competing for the prestigious Oscar statuette for the first time in the 93-year history of the Academy Awards. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the winners will have the opportunity to receive the Oscar statuettes personally, yet without the presence of an audience.

The Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova is among the five best supporting actress nominees. The South Korean actress Youn Yuh-jung is considered an Oscar frontrunner in this category.
