New organ transplantation regime under discussion

“The Executive Agency Medical Supervision is proposing the establishment of expert councils to assess and rank transplant candidates,” the agency’s executive director Dr. Georgi Hristov said in an interview for the BNR’s Horizont channel.

“This will make for more transparency. There will be representatives of patients’ organizations who will take part in the process as observers,” Dr. Hristov stated.

The changes are being proposed because of the revelations of criminal organ transplant schemes at Lozenets hospital. The proposals will be published for public discussion.

"A new set of documents will be drawn up for submission by foreign citizens when applying for transplantation in Bulgaria, including with regard to the origin of the money for the the surgery," Dr. Georgi Hristov said.
