Heraclea Sintica reveals more of its ancient treasures

Since the beginning of the new archaeological season, which started on 1 June, archaeologists have discovered a multitude of invaluable artifacts during digs at the ancient city of Heraclea Sintica , located in the region of Rupite. Among them – a depiction of Alexander the Great, a relief depicting a musician, a massive marble sculpture of a bull, a statue connected with the cult of Mithra, a 1st century inscription in honour of the Emperor Tiberius and an exquisite life-size statue of a young woman.

Archaeologists say that it is a statue of the ancient Greek goddess of victory Nike because they discovered it on the spot where the Acropolis once stood – the sanctuary of the ancient town. The statue has wings, which are very well preserved, but no head. It is thought to have been damaged in the raids by barbarian tribes at the end of the 3rd century.
