National Assembly President Iva Miteva is convening parliament for an extraordinary sitting on Tuesday over the footage showing police brutality at last year’s anti-government protests.
The sitting will hear out caretaker Interior Minister Boyko Rashkov, who is expected to announce what actions have been taken against the uniformed police officers who exceeded their powers, whether penalties have been imposed and measures taken so that such scenes shall not be repeated.
“There Is Such a People” (ITN), “Democratic Bulgaria”, the Bulgarian Socialist Party and “Stand Up! We Are Coming!” have already demanded that the people responsible be investigated. There has been no reaction from GERB-SDS party and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) regarding the footage of police brutality.
“Parliament as an emanation of the will of the people and a guarantor of the rule of law cannot stand aloof from what the footage shows,” Iva Miteva commented.
